THE HOMELESS GIRL BY KHADIJAT BABANSULE
THE HOMELESS GIRL
PART 1
Tolu was a bright and hardworking student who had a dream of becoming a doctor. She loved her mum more than anything in the world. Her mum was a single parent who worked as a nurse at a local hospital. She supported Tolu's education and encouraged her to pursue her passion.
Tolu was preparing for her WAEC exam, which was the most important exam of her life. She had studied for months and was confident that she would ace it. She wanted to make her mum proud and get a scholarship to a prestigious university.
One day, a few days before the exam, Tolu received a phone call from the hospital. It was the worst news of her life. Her mum had been involved in a car accident on her way to work. She was in a critical condition and had been rushed to the emergency room.
Tolu dropped everything and ran to the hospital. She prayed that her mum would be okay. She hoped that it was a mistake or a bad joke. She couldn't bear the thought of losing her mum.
She arrived at the hospital and asked for her mum. The receptionist directed her to the ICU. She ran to the ICU and saw a doctor standing outside a room. She recognized him as one of her mum's colleagues. She asked him about her mum.
The doctor looked at her with a sad expression and said, "I'm sorry, Tolu. Your mum didn't make it. She passed away a few minutes ago. She had severe internal bleeding and we couldn't save her. I'm so sorry for your loss."
Tolu felt a sharp pain in her chest. She couldn't breathe. She couldn't speak. She couldn't believe it. Her mum was gone. Just like that. She collapsed on the floor and started to cry.
She cried for hours. She cried until she had no tears left. She cried until she felt numb. She didn't care about anything anymore. She didn't care about the exam. She didn't care about her dream. She didn't care about her life.
She had lost her mum. She had lost her best friend. She had lost her everything.
Part 2
Tolu was devastated by the death of her mum. She had no one to comfort her or support her. She had no relatives or friends who cared about her. She felt alone and hopeless.
She decided to skip the WAEC exam. She didn't see the point of taking it. She didn't see the point of anything. She just wanted to disappear.
She packed a few things and left her home. She wandered the streets of Abuja, looking for a place to stay. She had no money and no plan. She just wanted to escape.
She came across a park where some homeless people were sleeping. She thought maybe she could join them. She was tired and hungry. She had nowhere else to go.
She approached a bench where a woman was lying. She looked old and frail, but she had a kind smile. She said, "Hello, dear. Are you lost?"
Tolu said, "No, I'm not lost. I'm just... looking for a place to sleep."
The woman said, "Well, you can sleep here if you want. There's plenty of room. What's your name?"
Tolu said, "I'm Tolu."
The woman said, "I'm Mama Ayo. I'm glad to meet you, Tolu. You look like a nice girl. Why are you here?"
Tolu hesitated. She didn't want to talk about her mum. She didn't want to talk about anything. But she felt a strange connection to Mama Ayo. She felt like she could trust her.
She said, "I... I lost my mum. She died in a car accident. She was the only person I had. I don't have anyone else. I don't have anything else."
Mama Ayo said, "Oh, Tolu. I'm so sorry. That's terrible. I know how you feel. I lost my husband and my son in a fire. They were the only people I had. I don't have anyone else. I don't have anything else."
Tolu said, "You do? You know how I feel?"
Mama Ayo said, "Yes, I do. I know the pain. I know the emptiness. I know the despair. But I also know something else. I know that life goes on. I know that there is hope. I know that there is a purpose. I know that there is a God."
Tolu said, "You do? How do you know that?"
Mama Ayo said, "I know that because He sent you to me. He sent you to me to show me that I'm not alone. He sent you to me to show me that I still have something to give. He sent you to me to show me that I still have something to live for."
Tolu said, "He did? He sent me to you?"
Mama Ayo said, "Yes, He did. He sent you to me to be my daughter. And He sent me to you to be your mother. We are family now, Tolu. We have each other. We have God. We have everything."
Tolu was touched by Mama Ayo's words. She felt a warmth in her heart. She felt a spark in her soul. She felt a tear in her eye.
She said, "Thank you, Mama Ayo. Thank you for being my mother. Thank you for giving me hope. Thank you for giving me a reason to live."
Mama Ayo said, "You're welcome, Tolu. Thank you for being my daughter. Thank you for giving me joy. Thank you for giving me a reason to love."
They hugged each other and smiled. They felt a bond that was stronger than blood. They felt a love that was stronger than death. They felt a peace that was stronger than pain.
They slept on the bench that night, holding each other. They woke up the next morning, ready to face the day. They decided to go to the nearest school and ask for help. They wanted to enroll Tolu in the exam. They wanted to give her a chance to fulfill her dream.
They walked to the school and met the principal. He was a kind man who listened to their story. He was moved by their courage and faith. He agreed to help them. He said, "Don't worry, Tolu. You can take the exam. I'll make the arrangements. You have a bright future ahead of you. You have a gift for learning. You have a passion for medicine. You have a destiny to be a doctor."
Tolu was grateful to the principal. She was grateful to Mama Ayo. She was grateful to God. She said, "Thank you, sir. Thank you, Mama Ayo. Thank you, God. You have given me a new life. You have given me a new dream. You have given me a new destiny."
She took the exam and passed it with flying colors. She got a scholarship to a prestigious university. She studied hard and graduated with honors. She became a doctor and worked at the same hospital where her mum had worked. She saved lives and healed wounds. She made her mum proud and made Mama Ayo happy. She made a difference and made a name for herself.
She was Tolu, the girl who lost her mum. She was Tolu, the girl who found a mother. She was Tolu, the girl who became a doctor. She was Tolu, the girl who overcame tragedy. She was Tolu, the girl who achieved success. She was Tolu, the girl who inspired many. She was Tolu, the girl who lived a story.
